Millennium development and sustainable development goals in education UGC NET Notes

The millennium development goals was set up by United Nations in September, 2000. It consists of 8 time bound goals, 18 targets and 48 indicators that the 191 UN member states have aimed on achieving by the year 2015. However, the millennium development goals focuses only towards the developing countries. 

Goals of Millennium Development 

The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are: 

• Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.

• Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education.

• Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women.

• Goal 4: Reduce child mortality.

• Goal 5: Improve maternal health.

• Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.

• Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability.

• Goal : Global partnership for development.

Sustainable Development 

The term sustainable development was given by “Brundtland Commission”. It defined sustainable development as “Development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Sustainable development goals target all countries whether undeveloped, developing, or developed. 

The General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September, 2015. Sustainable development goals have 17 goals and 169 targets. The SDGs were adopted by all 193 UN member countries as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and to ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by the year 2030.

Goals of Sustainable Development 

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are: 

• Goal 1: No poverty 

• Goal 2: Zero hunger 

• Goal 3: Good health and well-being. 

• Goal 4: Quality education. 

• Goal 5: Gender equality.

• Goal 6: Clean water and sanitation. 

• Goal 7: Affordable and clean energy.

• Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth. 

• Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. 

• Goal 10: Reduced inequality.

• Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities. 

• Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production. 

• Goal 13: Climate action. 

• Goal 14: Life below water. 

• Goal 15: Life on land. 

• Goal 16: Peace and Justice strong institutions. 

• Goal 17: Partnerships to achieve the goal. 

Therefore, sustainable development aims on meeting the needs of today, without compromising the needs of tomorrow for a better and more sustainable future for every human.
