When Tagore started his career in Bengal, he was given the scholarship to study law at the University of Calcutta. He was also awarded a scholarship to study at the London School of Economics (LSE) for the same year. In 1911, he returned to India to teach at the Visva-Bharati University as its first principal. He was also appointed as the vice-chancellor of the university on 20 April 1914 and held this position till 31 March 1919. In 1919, he left the university to join the civil service as a deputy secretary of the government of Bengal.
