Principles of Growth and Development B.Ed Notes

Introduction

Growth and Development are the essential elements when it comes to a deep understanding of child development. There are various principles that define growth and development in various senses.

Principles of Growth and Development

These principles are as follows:

Principle of Continuity

The process of development is continuous as this process goes till a lifetime. A person starts developing mental, emotional, and physical thoughts from early childhood which continue till the life-long process. For example, language abilities, experience, etc.

Principle of Individual Difference

The principle of individual difference denotes that every individual does not have similarities in the context of growth and development. Every child has a different level of thinking due to social, psychological, physical, environmental, and financial factors. These individual differences vary according to the stages of development.

Principle of Uniform Pattern:

The principle of Uniform Pattern refers to the pattern in which the growth and development take place is universal and in a fixed pattern despite having various individual differences. For example, the milk teeth of a child will come first before any other teeth.

Principle of Overall Development

The principle of overall development means the complete development of a human being from every perspective such as emotional, physical, social, financial, and psychological. These factors contributing to the development of a body are interrelated. Therefore, a teacher always keeps in mind the overall development of a student.

Principle of Correlation

The principle of Correlation refers to the interrelation of various factors such as the relation of physical growth with the financial factor. Similarly, several factors are influenced by the other factors which can be social, mental, financial, heredity, etc. For example, a student who is affluent will also be given more opportunities to socialize with others.

Principle of Concrete Thinking to Abstract Thinking

The principle of Concrete thinking to abstract thinking means that the development occurs in the way that a child starts thinking about concrete objects and then it develops to the abstract topics.

Principle of Predictability of Development

The principle of predictability is referred to the point that development can be assumed and predicted by others after analyzing the actions of intelligence, interests, capabilities, capacities, and personality attitudes.

Principle of the Frequency of Growth and Development Rate

It has been examined that a child has a rapid growth rate in childhood than the later stages of maturation. However, the pace at which the child grows is not uniform and fixed, the rate of growth is much more in the initial stages. Yet, the development at the qualitative level continuous to thrive.

Principle of General to Specific Development

This principle refers that the behavior of a child growing from general to a particular or specific direction. A child learns the general things at the initial levels but later on with the passage of growth, the child begins to learn specific things with names and with different identities. For example, a child grabs everything in a careless manner but later on, the child starts holding things with care.

Principle of Integration

The principle of integration means that a child starts to integrate or combine different parts along with the passage of growth. For example, as a child speaks the different sounds at first but with the lingual development, the child learns to integrate these sounds into words, words to sentences with meaning. Therefore, the child learns to combine smaller units into bigger units.
